Okay let’s talk about hair damage… I’ve always had long, healthy hair but that suddenly changed! I’ve colored my hair regularly for a few years now and started noticing the underneath layers were not growing as fast as the rest of my hair. Then, I noticed each time I washed my hair it seemed like it was getting was thinner. I could feel my hair was not as thick as it used to be! My hair became brittle, crunchy, dry, and uncontrollably oily, along with major thinning. At one point I had about half the hair I used to. Turns out my hair loss was due to a low thyroid. After fixing that, my hair was still damaged and not healing as quickly as I wanted it to. I started trying different products and after a year, I am back to coloring and needing haircuts more often than before. I wanted to share a few tricks as well as the products that saved my hair without breaking the bank. Here’s what I use now on a daily basis for maintenance:
Just like any good face mask a hair mask is always a good idea. I’ve seen these in Ulta anywhere from $10-20. If you want a solution for dry hair, pick up one of these Hask or Shea Moisture masks. (ONLY $1.99 & $2.99)
By far my favorite and most effective product, is the Hask Strengthening Oil! After using this I saw a big difference in the texture of my hair and how thick it became. I ran 2-3 drops of oil through damp hair & let it sit for about 10 minutes before drying. Another option is the Garnier Strength Activator Root to Tip Serum. Work this through damp hair for soft, silky hair that shines for days. (ONLY $1.99 & $4.69)
This suave moisture mask smells amazing and works so well! Leave this in your washed hair for about 10 minutes then rinse. Best product for soft hair! For shampoo the Garnier Whole Blends line is my favorite. If you want a gentle shampoo that repairs while you wash.. Go get some Honey Treasures shampoo!! (ONLY $2.94 & $3.47)
I started usually hair, skin, and nail vitamins for extra biotin. I didn’t notice a change immediately but over time, I stopped getting cracks in my nails and my hair got stronger. Another thing that worked for me was Argan Oil. I put a few drops on my scalp and brushed through my hair 3-4 times a week and after about a month I saw results. I noticed the most growth from using these two products! (Gummies are around $10 but the pills are $5.01 & the argan oil is $6.88- there are always coupons for this brand! )
Tips & Tricks
<Using a wide tooth comb to detangle wet hair. I use this one from Ulta!
<Letting your hair down..instead of tight ponytails go for a loose braid!
<Let the days of wrapping your hair in a towel be over! Pat your hair until damp and let it air dry instead of creating more damage with the blow dryer. [I just use a pack of microfiber towels from the dollar store]
<Blow drying. It can be so hard to find the right blow dryer! Luckily, there is a very helpful guide that breaks it down for you. This will even tell you what temperature is right for your hair type and so much more!
Now these were a bit more pricey, but did help my hair when it was at it’s worst. I definitely recommend these if you are losing hair or if yours is breaking and brittle. I used this shampoo every other day and let the conditioner set for about 3-5 minutes. The key to growing healthy hair is not washing it.. Yes I know when your hair is unhealthy you can’t help but want to wash it everyday but trust me it’s worth it! That brings me to dry shampoo.. During your grow out process dry shampoo will help you go up to 4 days without washing. I’d spray it in, blow dry a few seconds and then good as new. (Bargain tip: You can pick up the sample size bottles for about $8)
Use the Redken Pillow Proof blow dry spray/ thermal protectant. This will cut drying time in half and prevent further damage from extensive blow drying. The Kenra one smells so good!! (I always get my Redken products from the Walmart Salon-They usually put a rack out that is buy one get one 50% off & You can always get the travel size to save money)
Hope these products and tips work for you as much as they did for me! I use all of these everyday and my hair is finally healthy again 🙂
